Loblolly pines are stately, straight-growing trees native to the US southeast that are the most important timber tree across the region. Improved loblollies grow faster! Growing improved loblolly pine has become an integral part of sustainable forestry in the southeast. Loblollies planted on existing scrubland or former farmland turned landscapes overgrown with invasives can help reduce soil erosion, retain water, and provide a habitat for wildlife. Humans use this tree to provide wood for furniture, building materials, paper, and fuel. What's more, loblollies can help to filter pollutants from the air, providing cleaner air for people to breathe, and sequestering carbon in the ground and in the tree tissue itself.

Being so widely grown, it's an essential tree for helping to reduce global warming by absorbing and storing carbon dioxide. These benefits make improved loblolly pine a great option for anyone managing land in the Southeast (and even the Mid-Atlantic, Midwest, and Northeast — while the plant's natural range only goes as far north as New Jersey, they can now be grown somewhat farther north).

To grow improved loblolly pine successfully, selecting a site with full sun exposure and good drainage is important. Prepare the soil by digging a hole to a depth of 8-12 inches and adding a generous amount of organic matter, such as compost or manure. Plant the seedlings at least 6 feet apart in a single or double row, depending on the desired spacing. Water the seedlings regularly and mulch to help retain moisture and reduce weed growth. Prune and thin the trees as they grow to ensure they have adequate room to grow and develop and to promote a healthy and aesthetically pleasing canopy.

Fertilize the trees as needed to ensure they are getting adequate nutrition. Finally, monitor the trees regularly to ensure they are growing and developing correctly and to address any pest or disease issues that may arise. Our Alabama-grown seed was provided by Sheffield's Seed Company in Locke, NY. Growing Info, follow in order: Scarification: Soak in water, let stand in water for 24 hours.
